Learn About How To Choose The Best Backpacks For Your Kids

Your child’s school bag will likely be the most labor-intensive item on their back-to-school purchases. The backpack is taken to and from school every day. It has to withstand everyday use, including trips to and from school, luggage storage, and the rude treatment children give to their belongings.

If you find a good price on your backpack selections, you might consider purchasing two backpacks. With two, you have a spare backpack, in case your child breaks a buckle or strap on the backpack. It’s also fun for your child to turn off their backpack every now and then, just for a change.

Because it gets constant, daily use, you need to know what to look for in a backpack.

Quality matters in backpacks

There is a wide selection of school backpacks available during the back-to-school shopping season. You will find that quality and price can vary widely in the meantime. This is the best time to take advantage of the discount on backpacks, but remember to shop wisely.

You may be tempted to buy a cheap and fashionable backpack and just assume that you will be able to replace it if you have a problem. The problem is, you probably won’t be able to easily find a good backpack after the sale season back to school.

Cheap and low-quality backpacks usually last a few weeks to a few months. This is long enough for all school items on store shelves to be replaced with seasonal holiday merchandise. The selection of the remaining thin backpack is often limited to one or two options if a store continues to carry backpacks. Limited choices may result in quality issues and may not fit your child properly.

Three things to check

To find a quality backpack, Consumer Reports magazine invites you to inspect your backpack, inside and out, and look at the following:

Avoid loose, uneven, or careless seams that can come loose easily.

Check to see if raw or torn fabric may have protruding edges, discard backpacks with these defects.

Wear zippers that are exposed to the weather. Instead, opt for zippers with fabric flaps to keep water and other items in your backpack.

Find the optimal fit

“Backpacks that are inappropriate or misused can cause tension or pain in the back and shoulders. When buying a backpack, choose the right fit and comfort, not the price. Often the best backpack may not be the best, the stylish, or the expensive, ”said Matthew Halsey, director of pediatric orthopedics at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

To find the right backpack, Dr. Halsey offers the following tips:

Choose the right size

The width of the backpack must be proportional to the person’s width. For example, a small child should not choose an adult-sized backpack. In addition, the height of the backpack should be about two inches below the shoulder blades to the level of the waist or slightly above the waist.

Wide, padded straps

Look for wide, padded shoulder straps to provide more comfort and protect your shoulders from excessive pressure. It is important to use both straps to distribute the weight of the backpack evenly.  Using a single strap increases the load on one shoulder. The adjustable shoulder straps are useful not only for the correct fit but also for the correct position – again, the backpack should be just above the waist and both straps should remain the same length.

Look for pockets and compartments

Choose a backpack with pockets, slots, and dividers to evenly distribute the weight. In addition to using both shoulder straps and securing the package at the right height, consider backpacks that offer pockets, slots, and dividers to help distribute the extra weight evenly.

Don’t let them carry too much

Keep the weight of the packed backpack at 15% of your child’s body weight. It is important not to weigh your backpacks. This is especially true when considering children.

You should find a lightweight kids backpack, as it helps to reduce the extra shedding of kids. You can buy a lightweight backpack from Peppy Basket which is carried via an 18 months baby too.
